Why do we float? Our modern world of constant noise and sensory stimulation forces our “fight-or-flight” system to continuously fire, creating unwanted levels of the body’s stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. Imagine a space where you don’t feel anything, nor do you see or hear anything. The pod’s extremely unique environment is designed to allow for a minimal amount of sensory input to enter into your nervous system. When you float, the “fight-or-flight” response is dormant and the body begins to produce less and less of these hormones. Your brain instead will begin producing dopamine endorphins, stimulating feelings of pleasure and well-being. This state of deep relaxation also acts to downshift the brains very high frequency Alpha and Beta brainwaves (this is how we operate on a daily basis and make daily decisions) to the Theta brain wave (experienced briefly as you drift off to sleep each night and before you awake each morning). Anxiety, depression, insomnia and migraines have all been proven to show improvement after floating.
Pain Relief & Physical Recovery
Our bodies use a large portion of mental and physical resources to help counteract the force of gravity. While in the float pod, approximately 80% of the gravity we normally feel is no longer affecting our body. We no longer have to use those resources for basic stability and balance and our bodies can now use that extra surplus of energy resting, recuperating and healing anything that needs attention. Also, the gravity-reduced environment allows our body to decompress, specifically the joints and spinal column. Floating can help with all sorts of pain related issues including fibromyalgia, back pain relief, neck pain relief, arthritis and injury recovery. Our bodies can physically recover up to 4 times faster in a float tank than in a bed, sleeping, and injuries have been shown to heal twice as fast. REM cycles are not expedited (so you still need to sleep at night) but physical rest is expedited allowing for quicker recovery for athletes.
Inside the pod, where sensory input is eliminated, our brains are put into a mental state where learning abilities are at their highest and power of visualization is greatly enhanced. With practice, we can increase the amount of time we spend in the Theta state. Theta waves are generally produced from the right hemisphere of the brain. This is why floating is an amazing tool for enhancing our right hemispheric activities, such as creativity, inspiration and non-linear thought. Our dominant left hemisphere falls to the background (responsible for “fight-or-flight”, spatial reasoning, language center, our physical connection with our body). This allows for that constant chatter in our heads to go quiet, which can be a significant relief to most “Type A” personalities. Artists, musicians, chefs, dancers and athletes may greatly benefit from this.
